Rajya: States and Union Territories

Census 2011 figures

India's 28 states and 8 Union Territories, colored by what the 2011 census counted. Pick a measure, then tap a state or territory for its profile. Use the + and − buttons, or pinch, to zoom (Ctrl or ⌘ with the scroll wheel on a computer). The small ones, such as Delhi and Lakshadweep, get a dot so they are easy to hit.

These are 2011 counts. They are the latest census figures published. Populations have grown since, and Census 2027 is under way: house-listing runs from 1 April to 30 September 2026 and the population count is scheduled for February 2027, with results not before late 2027. Those dates come from Wikipedia's article on the census, which cites the government's announcements; the government's own release would not open from here.
A teaching map, not a survey document. State outlines are from Natural Earth. The country outline is its India-perspective version. Neither has been checked by the Survey of India. For the official depiction of India's boundary, use Survey of India maps.

Where the numbers come from

Census figures. Every population, sex-ratio, literacy, urban, caste and household number is worked out from the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner's Primary Census Abstract for India, states and districts, 2011 (file DDW_PCA0000_2011_Indiastatedist.xlsx). In that file, the 36 units add up exactly to the India total of 1,210,854,977 people.

How each measure is defined. Sex ratio is women per 1,000 men. Child sex ratio is the same for ages 0 to 6. Literacy is literates divided by the population aged 7 and over. Urban share is the urban population divided by the total. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe shares are of the total population. Density is population divided by area, using the areas below, so it can differ by a person or two from the census's own printed figure.

The literacy number for India. The file gives 72.98% for the whole country. Wikipedia and many other pages quote 74.04%, which does not match this file. It is probably an earlier provisional figure, but I could not confirm that. The state figures here match the file.

Today's map, 2011's counts. The census counted Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as one state, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as one state, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu as two Union Territories. For those five units, this page adds up or subtracts the district rows in the same file. Each is marked in its profile.

Areas, dates, languages, capitals. Areas, the dates each unit gained its present status, and official languages are from Wikipedia's States and union territories of India and each unit's own article. Language status differs between Union and state law and between Wikipedia's pages, so treat it as a guide. Capitals match the Rashtra plate.

Boundaries. State and Union Territory outlines are Natural Earth's 1:10m admin-1 layer, public domain. The country outline is the India-perspective version of admin-0. The hatched area is inside that outline but is not part of any state in Natural Earth's state layer. It is the part of the region administered by Pakistan and China, which India claims. The 2011 census did not count it, so it has no figures.

Not here yet. Districts, religion, mother tongues, the health survey (NFHS-6) and change since 2001.
